2025 as a filmmaker

The start of a new year is a good time to reflect on this past year of filmmaking, and it has been an extraordinary year.

I've really had a good crack at the filmmaking parts of my life this year.

I started the year editing the short film Mother's Tongue and was launched with the cast and the crew in April. Our small cast-and-crew party went really well. And then from there, Mother's Tongue been out on the film festival circuit and been doing quite well.

The film has screened at many festivals, earning nominations, semi‑finals, finals and several awards. It's been a great year for Mother's Tongue.

I also got to write a lot more this year, which was great, and that's going to lead me into a strong 2026 with some big projects happening.

I ran filmmaker workshops for creatives. The year began in Mandurah. It was a six-week PD course for creatives on using their mobile phone to make short films for their businesses. And I presented a one off workshop in Melbourne in November at a conference for government workers, which was also a privilege.

And as we got to September and October, apart from the pesky virus that I got that really put me out for about a whole month (still recovering) I got to shoot Alien Echo, my next short film, which right now is in the edit suite and pumping along.

So I'm really happy.

And that leads us into 2026, which is, I think, going to be an even bigger year. So the start of the year, obviously, Alien Echo needs to be finished up and published out there into the film festival circuit. I've been commissioned to make a short documentary starting about the middle of January onwards. So exciting about that.

And in the second half of 2026, it's going to really launch into a big project. There will be writing, there will be long nights, there will be time in the edit suites, there'll be time to get together with other filmmakers and other creatives. and really unleash more and more of that creative juices as we go throughout 2026. And who knows from there.

So stay tuned and be a creative punk.
