Why Red Matters: Emotion, Art, and Mother’s Tongue
The artwork from Mother’s Tongue, my latest short film, was beautifully put together by my super-talented wife, Tanya Regan.
Tanya put a delicate amount of work into the paintings for Mother’s Tongue, which I really appreciate.
For the climax of the film, we have Lucy’s art show, and this is very important artwork. The results were amazing and symbolic of what is needed in that part of the film. I just love it.
The paintings are all in red for a symbolic reason.
I stuck with the red motif theme in Mother’s Tongue. So the art paintings, the sayings, had to be done in red. The reason I went with red as a motif is that you can connect it to blood and the heart. In this story we have Lucy’s heart desire is in being an artist.
There’s also a little bit of other types of red throughout the film in other props, costumes and settings. When you see the film see if you can spot the red.
Emotions are a really cool way of continuously connecting something throughout a film, and I did that through the colour red in Mother’s Tongue.
