Why do film screening nights feel so different for filmmakers?

As a filmmaker, I learnt this today. Screening nights hit differently.

I am heading to the screening of a local independent feature film, Albatross, starring an incredible local actor who also worked with me on my live art show, Behind the Lens. She is brilliant, and that is Liv Richardson.

I am really looking forward to seeing her on the big screen.

Every time I go to a screening, I am reminded how much of a roller coaster filmmaking really is. Pride and nerves and that full body here we go feeling.

Because once the lights go down, it becomes all about the audience. Their reaction, their laughs, their silences, their shifts.

That is the moment the film actually becomes real.

I love supporting local stories, especially when they are led by such talented actors.

Nights like this remind me why we all probably make films in the first place.
