What can independent filmmakers learn from producers behind Black Mirror and Baby Reindeer?

Lessons from Industry Producers at His Majesty’s Theatre, Perth Western Australia.

I just got back from an incredible session at His Majesty’s Theatre with producers behind shows like Black Mirror and Baby Reindeer.

And honestly, it hit hard.

There were three big takeaways for me as an independent filmmaker.

The Hustle Is Real

The first lesson was simple.

No one is waiting for you.

If you want to build a career in film, you have to get in, make noise, and create your own momentum. Opportunities do not just arrive. You have to push for them, build them, and keep showing up.

Get an Agent

The second takeaway was about representation.

As a director or writer, having an agent in your corner can open doors that you simply cannot access alone. It is about having someone who can advocate for you, connect you, and help position your work in the right spaces.

Create Your Own Opportunities

The third lesson was about being proactive.

If you want to attach yourself as a director to projects, you need to create those opportunities yourself. Set things up, reach out, and make it happen.

There is also potential support through organisations like Screenwest, which can help bring those opportunities to life.

Keep Moving Forward

It is a changing industry, no doubt.

But the message from the session was clear.

Keep pushing.

Keep creating.
